7 Crystals Everyone Needs

If you’re just getting started on your crystal collection, it’s often difficult to decide exactly which gemstones to bring into your home. Walking into any gem, crystal, or metaphysical shop, you’ll find a dizzying array of crystals in a rainbow of colors, sizes, and shapes. It can feel overwhelming. However, for anyone new to healing crystals, you can’t go wrong with the following seven crystals, which are easy to find, affordable, and versatile.

Crystals grew inside rock like arithmetic flowers. They lengthened and spread, added plane to plane in an awed and perfect obedience to an absolute geometry that even stones – maybe only the stones – understood.  – Annie Dillard

1. Clear Quartz

If you only can buy one crystal, clear quartz is the one for you. Quartz (silicon dioxide) is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth’s crust, and it’s made from two highly abundant elements on earth, silicon, and oxygen. Clear quartz is widely available, inexpensive, and it’s a hard worker. Physically and energetically, it is associated with your head and your crown chakra.

Properties & Uses

Clear quartz amplifies energy. It’s also a universal healing crystal, healing body, mind, and spirit.

  • Use it in meditation to help connect to the Divine.
  • Make a crystal elixir by placing it in a crystal infusion water bottle.
  • Place it in the pots of houseplants to send healing energy to them.
  • Wear a clear quartz necklace to promote clarity.
  • Use it with other crystals to amplify their healing energy.

2. Smoky Quartz

Smoky quartz is my absolute favorite crystal. As the name implies, it’s the color of smoke, only you can see right through it. I use smoky quartz nearly as much as clear quartz.

Properties & Uses

Smoky quartz transmutes negative energy to positive. It’s also detoxifying and protective, and the darker variations can be grounding. Physically and energetically, it is associated with your lower extremities and your root chakra.

Sprinkle chips of smoky quartz around your property or the perimeter of your house so all energy that comes into your home or onto your property is cleansed of negativity before it reaches you.

  • Do grounding meditations holding smoky quartz in your non-dominant (receiving) hand.
  • If you work with someone who is negative or work in a negative environment, keep smoky quartz at your desk to neutralize and transform the negativity.
  • Wear smoky quartz in a pinky ring to help firm your personal boundaries.
  • Keep a piece in your glove box to ward off road rage.

3. Amethyst

Amethyst is frequently used in jewelry as a semi-precious gemstone, and it is prized for its lovely purple color. It’s another quartz variant.

Properties & Uses

Amethyst can help promote intuition, strengthen your ability to reason, improve sleep, and help you have meaningful dreams. It’s also known as a sober stone and is a crystal of safe travel. Physically and energetically, it is associated with your head and your third eye chakra.

  • Wear amethyst earrings to boost your intuitive ability.
  • Place a piece of amethyst on your bedside table or underneath your mattress to promote peaceful sleep and meaningful dreams. It’s especially helpful for insomnia.
  • If you’re struggling with sobriety of any type, carry a piece of amethyst with you in a pocket and use it as a worry stone when you’re struggling with cravings.
  • Tuck a piece in your suitcase or carry-on for safe travel.

4. Citrine

Citrine, yet another quartz variant, ranges in color from pale yellow to deep brown. It’s important to know that a lot of citrine on the market is made from heat treating either amethyst or smoky quartz; the heat makes it turn yellow. However, it’s easy to identify the differences between heat-treated and natural citrine.

Natural citrine is pale yellow in color and doesn’t come in clusters, while heat-treated citrine has a deeper color with either an orange or brownish tint, and it’s sometimes sold in clusters. Fortunately, both types have similar properties, so choose the pieces you’re drawn to.

Properties & Uses

Citrine is known as the stone of prosperity; it can help boost abundance consciousness and reduce lack of consciousness. It can also help build self-confidence and self-esteem and calm an excess of ego-identification. Physically and energetically, it is associated with solar plexus chakra.

  • Place a piece of citrine in your cash register or wallet to encourage financial abundance.
  • Put a piece of citrine in the Southeast corner of your home or any room. This is the feng shui prosperity corner.
  • Wear a citrine pendant on a long chain, or a citrine ring or bracelet to boost self-esteem.

5. Rose Quartz

Another quartz variant, rose quartz is a beautiful light pink to violet-pink color that vibrates with the energy of unconditional love.

Properties & Uses

Rose quartz is the quartz with the softest energy. It is a stone of kindness and compassion, forgiveness, divine feminine energy, and comfort. Physically and energetically, it is associated with the heart region and chakra.
Wear a rose quartz pendant to promote unconditional love.

  • Add rose quartz to bathwater with a few drops of lavender oil to promote peace and relaxation.
  • Gift rose quartz to newly engaged or married couples to support a loving partnership.
  • Create a rose quartz home spray by infusing water with rose quartz and adding a few drops of jasmine or rose otto essential oil. Add ¼ teaspoon of aloe vera gel as an emulsifier. Shake well and spritz in a shared bedroom or use as a pillow spray to promote love.
  • Meditate with rose quartz when you need to forgive someone.

6. Chalcedony

Chalcedony is a type of microcrystalline quartz with many different variations (such as agate), but in the world of healing crystals, it refers to a soft, blue-colored variation of the stone.

Properties & Uses

Chalcedony is a stone of peace. It can also enhance communication, support speaking and living your truth, and strengthen creative expression. Physically and energetically, it is associated with your throat region and chakra.

  • Wear a chalcedony pendant to promote creative expression.
  • Keep a piece of chalcedony with you when you have to engage in public speaking.
  • Use chalcedony to help you achieve calm and peace by working with it in meditation or keeping it in spaces with overactive energy.

7. Carnelian

Carnelian is an orange to red-orange variety of chalcedony. It gets its vivid orange coloring from the presence of iron oxide impurities in the microcrystalline quartz base.

Properties & Uses

Carnelian can boost courage and spark joy. It’s energizing and promotes creative ideas. Physically, it’s associated with the abdominal region and the sacral chakra.

  • Infuse water with carnelian (use a crystal infusion water bottle) and drink it to energize you throughout the day.
  • If you work in a creative profession or have creative hobbies, wear a carnelian bracelet.
  • Keep carnelian in your workspaces to promote creative problem-solving.
  • Carry a piece of carnelian in your pocket if you have an upcoming job interview, important presentation or meeting, or an audition to help you perform your best.
